Introduction The Counselling Unit staff provide assistance to any family members who have concerns about drug and alcohol use in their family. The Unit receives referrals from the Community Development/Parish Liaison and Education Units, as well as from agencies external to the Centre. Family members who speak a language other than English can come for counselling. An interpreter can be brought in to assist with communication and translation. Services Provided Range of services provided:
Client group The Counselling unit is specifically designed to include all the family, and to meet the needs of any of the family members: parents, siblings, partners, drug and alcohol users, their children, and extended family. The service aims to give family members objective accurate information on the drug user's experience, understanding for families who have become engulfed in the drug/alcohol use and estranged from the person, and develop strategies particular to each family for dealing with their stressful situations. Families are assisted to reflect on how their family interacts and how to encourage positive changes. It takes into account different family values, structures and cultures. Staffing Qualified and experienced staff counsel in the Unit. A manager who is a trained and accredited counsellor oversees the counselling in the Unit. In addition to paid staff, some select, well trained students completing their tertiary studies are permitted to counsel in the unit under guidelines, and with training and supervision. All staff are guided by an Australian Counsellor Codes of Ethics according to their particular professional discipline. Procedure Initial contact can be made by telephoning or calling in person. A counsellor listens to the caller's details and makes an assessment about how our service can provide support. Depending on the particular needs of people as they present for assistance, sessions may be conducted for individuals, couples, family or groups. A flexible model of service delivery has been developed to accommodate the chaotic family environment often occurring. A range of treatment modalities is available, aiming towards improving the family functioning, individual members coping skills and overall family safety. Both current and historical issues can be addressed in counselling. Families can expect to experience a sense of relief, and positive changes regularly occur when they involve themselves in the process of family recovery. The Cyrene Centre Availability and cost Counselling services provided by Mary of the Cross Centre are available to all people free of charge. Most counselling sessions take place Monday to Friday 9:00am until 5:00pm (but as late as 8.00pm by arrangement). All matters are treated confidentially within the Counselling Unit and the greatest care is taken to respect the privacy of both the family and each individual member.
